# Does teaching adolescents about period symptoms improve their knowledge and attitudes?

Yes, after one week of teaching, more girls had adequate knowledge about PMS and more had positive attitudes. There was no comparison group.

 Early or limited evidence

100 adolescent school girls in Madurai, India, mostly ages 15-18

## What they did

An educational study with 100 adolescent girls in India. Girls ages 15-18 took a knowledge test and attitude survey, received one week of teaching about period symptoms, then took the same tests again.

## What they found

Knowledge improved from 95% inadequate to 50% adequate. Positive attitudes increased from 41% to 48%. Knowledge scores rose from 12.4 to 23.6 (p<0.05). Attitude scores rose from 11.0 to 13.9 (p<0.05).

## What it means for you

Teaching girls about period symptoms helps them understand and feel better about PMS. Main limitation: without a control group, we cannot be sure the teaching caused the improvement rather than other factors.
