# Does medroxyprogesterone acetate cause side effects when added to hormone therapy?

No, this study found no significant physical or psychological side effects from medroxyprogesterone acetate compared to placebo, regardless of women's PMS history.

 Early or limited evidence

24 women with previous hysterectomy and oophorectomy

## What they did

A randomized double-blind cross-over trial of 24 women who had ovaries and uterus surgically removed. Women received estrogen (100 micrograms, days 1-25) plus either medroxyprogesterone acetate 10 mg (days 12-25) or placebo. Daily mood and physical symptoms were monitored.

## What they found

No significant differences between medroxyprogesterone acetate and placebo in physical or psychological side effects. Patient preference for treatment was equally divided between the two.

## What it means for you

A short course of medroxyprogesterone acetate added to estrogen therapy did not cause noticeable side effects in this small study. The study only tested one cycle and included women without functioning ovaries, so results may not apply to all women or longer use.
