# How common are PMS and PMDD? Are stress, anxiety, depression, and sleep problems related to them?

About 22.49% of women have PMS and 1.36% have PMDD. Women with these conditions have much higher stress, anxiety, and depression and worse sleep than women without them.

## What they did

Researchers interviewed 587 women from urban areas in India and asked them about PMS symptoms, sleep, stress, anxiety, and depression. They selected 140 women with PMS or PMDD and compared them to 140 women without these conditions.

## What they found

About 22.49% of all women studied had PMS and 1.36% had PMDD. Among women with PMS or PMDD, 63.57% had moderate PMS, 30.71% had severe PMS, and 5.71% had PMDD. Women with PMS or PMDD also had much higher stress, anxiety, and depression and worse sleep than women without these conditions.

## What it means for you

PMS and PMDD are relatively common, especially PMS. The strong connection between PMS and mental health problems suggests these may be linked. However, this is an observational study, so we cannot prove one causes the other.
