# How common is PMS among college-going girls in India?

More than half had some PMS symptoms. 27.5% had severe PMS and 3.5% had very severe PMS.

 Early or limited evidence

200 college-going girls in Ambala, Haryana; 56% aged 20-22; 98.5% unmarried; 75.5% with normal BMI.

## What they did

A survey of 200 college girls in Ambala, Haryana. Girls filled out a Google form about PMS symptoms, periods, and lifestyle. Most were aged 20-22, unmarried, and had normal weight.

## What they found

27.5% had severe PMS, 21% had mild PMS, and 3.5% had very severe PMS. 75.5% had normal body weight. 38.55% experienced severe period pain. 86.5% had a 25-30 day cycle. PMS was linked to age group, where they lived, year of study, how many days they bleed, period pain, family history of period pain, smoking, and sleep patterns.

## What it means for you

PMS and period pain are very common in college-aged women in India. Several life factors seemed linked to worse PMS, including study stress, where you live, and sleep quality. The study was done in one city, so numbers may differ elsewhere in India.
