# Does drospirenone hormone therapy reduce weight gain and PMS-like symptoms?

In studies of drospirenone-containing hormone therapy, women had less or no weight gain (mean decrease of 1.2 kg after one year) and improvements in bloating, swelling, breast tenderness, and mood.

 Early or limited evidence

Women in hormone replacement therapy or oral contraceptive clinical studies (review of prior research)

## What they did

Review of clinical studies examining hormone therapies containing drospirenone. Studies measured effects on body weight and fluid-related symptoms.

## What they found

Women on 1 mg estradiol with 2 mg drospirenone had mean body weight decrease of 1.2 kg after 1 year (p less than 0.001), compared to weight gain with estradiol alone. Improvements were seen in breast tenderness, swelling, abdominal bloating, skin changes, fatigue, and depressive mood.

## What it means for you

Drospirenone may help prevent weight gain and improve fluid-related symptoms compared to other hormone therapies, which could improve quality of life. This review summarizes earlier studies but provides limited new primary evidence. A larger, more rigorous study would strengthen the findings.
