Survey study, 2015

# Are eating attitudes different in adolescents with PMS?

Yes. Both what adolescents eat and their attitudes toward eating differ in those with PMS compared to those without. Most adolescents with PMS experienced multiple symptoms including fatigue (93.5%), irritability (91.6%), and depressive feelings (88.8%).

 Early or limited evidence

383 adolescents aged 13-19 (214 with PMS, 169 without)

## What they did

Cross-sectional study of 383 adolescents aged 13-19 (214 with PMS, 169 without). Researchers assessed diet and eating attitudes using food frequency questionnaires and eating behavior questionnaires.

## What they found

PMS prevalence was 55.9%. Among those with PMS: 88.8% had depressive feelings, 93.5% fatigue, 91.6% irritability, 77.1% depressive thoughts, 76.6% pain, 74.8% appetite changes, 73.8% sleep changes, and 52.3% swelling. Eating attitudes and dietary choices differed significantly between groups with and without PMS.

## What it means for you

Both what young women eat and their attitudes toward eating may be linked to PMS. The main limitation is that this study is cross-sectional, so we cannot tell whether different eating attitudes cause PMS or whether PMS causes different eating attitudes.
