# Is nutrition status linked to PMS, and does health education help?

Girls with normal nutrition status had less PMS. The age they started their period was not linked to PMS. Health education improved their knowledge about PMS.

 Early or limited evidence

50 female junior high school students in Surabaya, Indonesia

## What they did

Quasi-experimental study of 50 female junior high school students in Surabaya, Indonesia. Researchers measured nutrition status and PMS symptoms, taught a health education class, and checked how much knowledge improved.

## What they found

70% of students had PMS symptoms. 62% started their period at age 12-14. 50% had normal nutrition. Nutrition status was connected to PMS, but the age they started their period was not. Health education increased knowledge about PMS.

## What it means for you

Girls who eat well may have less PMS, though we cannot prove diet caused this. Learning about PMS helps. This was a small study of 50 girls at one school in Indonesia, so results may not apply everywhere.

70%

experienced PMS symptoms

50%

had normal nutritional status

62%

began menstruation at age 12-14 years
