Survey study, 2023

# Is there a link between PMS, aggression, and weight in teenage girls?

Yes. As PMS symptoms got worse, aggression increased. Girls with higher weight also had more PMS and more aggression.

 Early or limited evidence

1,450 teenagers aged 12-18 years attending a pediatric clinic.

## What they did

Researchers asked 1,450 teenage girls to complete questionnaires about PMS and aggression while measuring their weight and body size.

## What they found

All 1,450 girls in the study had some level of PMS. As PMS levels increased, physical aggression, anger, hostility, and verbal aggression all increased. Girls with higher weight and body size had higher levels of PMS and aggression compared to those with lower weight.

## What it means for you

PMS and aggression may be linked in teenagers, and both may be connected to weight. This is the first study to look at all three together in young people. However, we cannot tell whether one causes the other or if they share a common cause.

1,450

Teenagers aged 12-18
