Case-control study, 2020

# Does a genetic variation in the estrogen receptor cause PMS?

No. This specific genetic variant was equally common in women with and without PMS, so it does not appear to cause PMS.

 Early or limited evidence

50 Polish women with PMS and 25 Polish women without PMS

## What they did

A case-control study comparing 50 women with PMS to 25 women without PMS, testing for a genetic variant (T-397C) in the estrogen receptor gene using polymerase chain reaction.

## What they found

The genetic variant rates were nearly identical in women with and without PMS. TT genotype was 24% in both groups, TC was 52% in controls and 46% in PMS, and CC was 24% in controls and 30% in PMS. No significant difference was found.

## What it means for you

This particular genetic variation does not appear to cause PMS, though this is a small study in one population. Larger studies would be needed to confirm findings in other groups.
