# Does a specific gene variant increase the risk of severe PMS?

Women with the DD variant of the ACE gene may have a higher risk of severe PMS. Women with this variant had 3.43 times higher odds of severe PMS compared to women without it.

 Early or limited evidence

50 women with PMS and 25 control women without PMS

## What they did

Researchers studied 50 women with PMS (25 with mild form, 25 with severe form) and 25 women without PMS. They used a lab technique to identify which variant of the ACE gene each woman had.

## What they found

The DD gene variant was found in 52% of women with severe PMS compared to 24% of women without PMS. Women with the DD variant had an odds ratio of 3.43 for developing severe PMS.

## What it means for you

A specific gene variant may increase the risk of severe PMS, suggesting a genetic link. However, the study was very small and the result is not fully conclusive.
