# Does sleeping longer help teenage athletes experience less PMS interference with sports?

Yes. Teenage girls who sleep longer in one year are less likely to have PMS symptoms interfere with their athletic performance the next year.

 Moderate study design

108 female Japanese high-school athletes with regular menstrual cycles

## What they did

A two-year study following 108 Japanese high-school female athletes. They completed surveys about their sleep duration, menstrual symptoms, and how much PMS interfered with their athletic performance in both years.

## What they found

In the second year, getting more sleep in the first year was associated with lower likelihood of increased PMS interference with athletic performance (odds ratio 0.982, 95% confidence interval 0.970-0.994). PMS interference with athletic performance decreased from year one to year two.

## What it means for you

Longer sleep duration may help prevent PMS from disrupting athletic performance. Main limitations are that this was observational (not an experiment testing whether changing sleep helps), involved only Japanese adolescent athletes, and used self-reported sleep and symptoms.
