# How aware are Japanese students of PMDD and what are their attitudes toward premenstrual symptoms?

Only 20.6% of students had heard of PMDD. Many believed premenstrual symptoms should be endured rather than treated.

 Early or limited evidence

1846 university students in Japan (949 female, 892 male)

## What they did

A survey of 1846 university students (949 female, 892 male) asking about PMDD awareness and attitudes. Female students were also screened for PMDD symptoms using a questionnaire.

## What they found

Only 20.6% of all students were familiar with PMDD. Among 920 female students screened, 3.7% were classified as having suspected PMDD. Some believed that premenstrual symptoms should be endured, and only 36.2% thought that the disruptions caused by these symptoms were a loss to society. Some women in the suspected PMDD group were unaware of their condition.

## What it means for you

Many women have PMDD but don't know what it is, and people around them don't understand that it causes real problems. Education about PMDD is needed so women can seek help.
