# Does light exposure, exercise, and meal timing affect PMS severity?

Yes, for some women. Morning-type women with more evening screen time had worse mood symptoms. Evening-type women with less daytime light had worse mood and water retention. Meal timing did not significantly affect PMS.

 Moderate study design

564 Japanese women aged 20-49 (249 morning types, 315 evening types)

## What they did

564 Japanese women aged 20-49 filled out surveys about PMS symptoms and lifestyle habits (light exposure, screen time, exercise, meal timing). They were classified by chronotype (morning or evening type).

## What they found

Among 564 women, 93.3% reported pain, 90.4% reported water retention, 47.0% reported autonomic reactions, and 85.5% reported negative affect. For morning types, 4 or more hours of screen-time after sunset was linked to higher negative affect scores. For evening types, less than 2 hours of daytime light exposure was linked to increased negative affect and water retention. Exercise was also linked to increased water retention in evening types. Meal timing was not significantly associated with symptoms.

## What it means for you

Light exposure and exercise timing may help manage some PMS symptoms, but the effect depends on whether you're naturally a morning or evening person. Since this is correlational, we can't say light and exercise definitely cause the changes, only that they're associated.
