Survey study, 2025

# Does blood pressure change during different phases of the menstrual cycle in women with PMS?

Yes. Blood pressure is noticeably higher during the luteal phase (the second half of the cycle) compared to the follicular phase. Women with more severe PMS had bigger blood pressure increases.

 Moderate study design

100 women teachers with PMS; 43% aged 33-37 years; 75% married; 86% reported family history of PMS.

## What they did

A cross-sectional study of 100 women teachers with PMS. Blood pressure was measured during the follicular phase (early cycle) and luteal phase (late cycle). Researchers looked at how blood pressure changes related to PMS severity.

## What they found

Mean systolic blood pressure increased from 117.50 mmHg in the follicular phase to 129.02 mmHg in the luteal phase. Mean diastolic blood pressure rose from 79.84 mmHg to 85.38 mmHg. Women with higher PMS severity in the luteal phase had larger increases in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

## What it means for you

Women with PMS have higher blood pressure in the second half of their cycle, especially if they have severe PMS. These blood pressure changes might contribute to or worsen some PMS symptoms. The study focused on teachers, so results may differ in other groups of women.
