Survey study, 2023

# Do hormone levels differ between women with and without PMS?

Yes, clear differences. Women with PMS have significantly higher estrogen and lower progesterone compared to those without PMS. Electrolyte levels are similar between groups.

 Early or limited evidence

30 young unmarried women with PMS in Bangladesh

## What they did

Cross-sectional study in Bangladesh. 30 young unmarried women with PMS and a comparison group had blood tests measuring sodium, potassium, estrogen, and progesterone during the late luteal phase. They also answered questionnaires about their PMS symptoms.

## What they found

Women with PMS had mean estrogen of 283.53 pg/ml compared to 177.10 in the non-PMS group. Mean progesterone was 14.67 ng/ml in the PMS group versus 19.35 in the non-PMS group. Sodium and potassium were similar between groups. PMS symptoms including irritability, bloating, backache, depression, fatigue, breast tenderness, headache, and anxiety were much higher in the PMS group compared to their own postmenstrual scores.

## What it means for you

High estrogen and low progesterone in the late menstrual phase appear to be linked to PMS symptoms. Electrolyte levels do not seem to be the main issue. However, this is a small study from one medical college in Bangladesh, so findings may not apply to other populations.
