# What do we currently know about PMDD?

PMDD is increasingly recognized as a serious diagnosis affecting 3-8% of women. We understand its symptoms and how to diagnose it, but we don't yet have enough high-quality research to recommend evidence-based treatments.

## What they did

This is a summary of current knowledge about PMDD that reviews what is known about diagnosis, epidemiology, possible causes, and treatment options.

## What they found

PMDD is characterized by emotional, physical, and behavioral changes during the premenstrual phase that cause significant distress and impaired functioning. The 12-month prevalence is 3-8% among women of reproductive age. PMDD was added as a new diagnostic category in the DSM-5 (the official psychiatric diagnostic manual) under depressive disorders. However, it is not yet included in the ICD-10, another international diagnostic system. The underlying mechanisms are still not well understood and likely involve multiple factors.

## What it means for you

PMDD is increasingly recognized as a serious condition worthy of its own diagnosis separate from other mood disorders. However, there is still a significant lack of randomized controlled trials in women with PMDD, making it difficult for doctors to recommend evidence-based treatments. More research is needed to understand what causes PMDD and what treatments work best.
