Survey study, 2021

# How common is PMS in women of reproductive age and what increases the risk?

47% of 500 women aged 15-49 had PMS. Being younger (15-46), single, a smoker, having painful periods, or having a family history of PMS increased the risk. This is one region so results may differ elsewhere.

 Moderate study design

500 women aged 15-49

## What they did

Researchers interviewed 500 women aged 15-49 face-to-face. They collected information about age, marital status, smoking, and menstrual symptoms, and used a PMS scale to identify PMS.

## What they found

47% had PMS. The most severe symptoms in order were pain, bloating, fatigue, change in appetite, irritability, and anxiety. Risk factors for PMS included being aged 15-46, being single, smoking, having dysmenorrhea (painful periods), and having a family history of PMS.

## What it means for you

Nearly half of women in their reproductive years experience PMS. Several factors like age, marital status, smoking, and family history increase the risk. Since this is one study in one region, results may be different in other populations.
