Yes, according to this study. Four weeks of progressive muscle relaxation produced a significant change in pain levels, and the authors concluded it can help reduce pain in teenagers with PMS.

 Early or limited evidence

30 high school girls in Yogyakarta with PMS

## What they did

Quasi-experimental study. 30 high school girls in Yogyakarta did progressive muscle relaxation exercises twice per week for 4 weeks, for 10-15 minutes per session. Pain was measured before and after using a standard scale.

## What they found

Pain scores changed from 2.03 before to 2.67 after the exercises. The study detected a significant change overall.

## What it means for you

Progressive muscle relaxation may help reduce pain in teenagers with PMS. This is a small study with no control group, so we cannot be sure the relaxation exercises themselves caused the change rather than something else.
