# Are low vitamin D levels and higher body weight linked to worse PMS symptoms?

Yes, women with PMS tend to have lower vitamin D levels and higher body weight. About 59% have vitamin D deficiency, which is linked to more severe PMS.

 Early or limited evidence

200 women aged 15-45 with PMS history in Hyderabad, Pakistan

## What they did

Cross-sectional study of 200 women aged 15-45 with PMS history conducted May-October 2023 at Isra University Hospital in Pakistan. Researchers measured height, weight, BMI, and blood vitamin D3 levels. They rated PMS symptom severity as mild, moderate, or severe.

## What they found

Mean age was 28.97 ± 6.49 years. 59% had vitamin D deficiency and 4.5% had sufficient vitamin D. There was an inverse relationship between vitamin D and BMI (p less than 0.05). 35% of those with severe PMS had deficient vitamin D. Correlation analysis showed slight negative association between vitamin D and BMI (r=-0.427, p less than 0.001) and between PMS severity and vitamin D (r=-0.41, p less than 0.001).

## What it means for you

Low vitamin D is linked to higher weight and worse PMS. We cannot tell if vitamin D deficiency causes PMS or whether they are linked through another factor. Limitation: cross-sectional design, single hospital in Pakistan, so results may not apply to other populations.
