# How common is PMS in adolescent girls, and does education about PMS help reduce symptoms?

PMS affected 40.9% of urban girls and 51.6% of rural girls. Three months after an educational program, girls reported significant decreases in all PMS symptoms compared to before the program.

 Early or limited evidence

Adolescent girls in 4 secondary schools in Pondicherry, India (2 rural, 2 urban)

## What they did

Conducted an educational program about PMS in 4 schools in Pondicherry, India (2 rural and 2 urban). Girls filled out questionnaires about their PMS symptoms before the program and again three months after it ended.

## What they found

Before the program, 40.9% of urban girls and 51.6% of rural girls had PMS symptoms. After the educational program, total PMS scores and all subscale scores decreased significantly compared to before the program.

## What it means for you

Education may help girls manage PMS symptoms. However, without a control group, we cannot know if improvement came from the education, from time passing, or from other factors. This study is from one region in India.

51.6%

Rural girls with PMS before program

40.9%

Urban girls with PMS before program

3 months

Follow-up period after program
