Survey study, 1999

# Does education about PMS help reduce symptoms in teenage girls?

Yes. Girls who received education about PMS reported significantly lower symptom scores 3 months later, while girls in the control group showed no change.

 Early or limited evidence

94 schoolgirls aged 14 to 18 from Hong Kong

## What they did

Researchers divided 94 schoolgirls aged 14 to 18 from four Hong Kong schools into an education group and a control group. The education group received a PMS education program. Knowledge and symptom scores were measured right after the program and again 3 months later.

## What they found

Right after the education program, girls in the education group had significantly higher knowledge scores. Three months later, they reported significant reductions in total PMS scores and in scores for three specific symptom types. The control group's PMS scores did not change.

## What it means for you

Education about PMS may help reduce how severe symptoms feel. However, the study was small and only included girls from one country, so results may not apply everywhere.
