# What factors affect PMS severity in teenage girls?

Sleep patterns, stress, attitudes about menstruation, and limiting exposure to chemicals all affected PMS severity. Together these factors explained 37% of the differences in PMS severity.

 Early or limited evidence

192 female middle school students in South Korea

## What they did

Researchers surveyed 192 middle school girls in Korea about their sleep patterns, stress levels, attitudes toward menstruation, and behaviors that reduce chemical exposure, then looked at how these factors related to PMS severity.

## What they found

79.2% of girls had intermediate sleep patterns. Menstrual pain severity, use of pain medications, family history of PMS, overall stress, and behaviors reducing chemical exposure all significantly affected PMS severity. These five factors together explained 37% of PMS severity differences.

## What it means for you

Stress, sleep, and chemical exposure may contribute to PMS in teenagers, but many other unknown factors also matter since only 37% of PMS severity was explained. This was a convenience sample of Korean middle school students, so results may not apply to all teenagers or adult women.
