# Can a tape-based 'balance taping' therapy ease period pain and PMS symptoms?

Among 51 female university students, those who received balance taping therapy had significantly less period pain and milder PMS than those who did not, but the study was small and did not randomly assign who got the treatment.

 Early or limited evidence

51 female university students with dysmenorrhea and PMS.

## What they did

This was a before-and-after study with a comparison group that wasn't randomly chosen. Of 51 female university students, 26 received balance taping therapy and 25 received no treatment. Researchers compared their period pain (dysmenorrhea) and PMS levels using statistical tests.

## What they found

The group that got balance taping showed a significant decrease in dysmenorrhea (F=16.50, p<.001) and PMS (F=11.04, p=.002) compared with the control group. After treatment, this group also had lower dysmenorrhea (F=16.50, p<.001) and PMS (F=13.95, p<.001) than the control group.

## What it means for you

Balance taping therapy may help reduce period pain and PMS symptoms, but because the groups were not randomly assigned and the study was small and done in one setting, this result needs confirmation from larger, better-controlled studies before it can be recommended with confidence.
