Survey study, 2026

# Do nursing students with PMS experience excessive daytime sleepiness?

Yes, most experienced mild sleepiness (55.1%) and sleepiness increased with PMS severity. However, only 2 students had severe PMS, so we cannot be confident about that group.

 Moderate study design

296 female nursing students

## What they did

Descriptive cross-sectional study of 296 female nursing students. Researchers measured PMS severity using the Shortened Premenstrual Assessment Form and daytime sleepiness using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale.

## What they found

Most students had mild PMS (65.2%) and mild sleepiness (55.1%). A gradient pattern emerged, with higher sleepiness and greater severity among those with moderate PMS compared to mild PMS. All students with severe PMS (n=2) experienced daytime sleepiness. Affective symptoms were the most common PMS complaints.

## What it means for you

Sleepiness appears linked to PMS severity in nursing students. However, the study is small and descriptive rather than explanatory. Only 2 students had severe PMS, which is too few to draw firm conclusions about that group. Nursing students face unique academic stressors, so results may not apply to all women.
