# How common are PMS and PMDD in female students with mental disability?

About 7% experienced PMS symptoms and 8% experienced PMDD symptoms. Most needed help and information about menstruation.

 Early or limited evidence

108 female students with mental disability aged about 18 years from schools in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

## What they did

Surveyed 108 female students with mental disability from 17 special schools in Yogyakarta, Indonesia from January to March 2016. Measured menstrual symptoms and their need for help and information during menstruation. PMS and PMDD were diagnosed using standard medical criteria.

## What they found

7.41% of students had PMS symptoms and 8.33% had PMDD symptoms. About 81% needed information about how menstruation works. About 22% needed help putting on pads and 21% needed help cleaning up during menstruation.

## What it means for you

PMS and PMDD occur at relatively low rates in this group of students with mental disability. Most students needed education about menstruation itself, and many needed practical help with menstrual care. Caregivers and teachers should watch for mood and behavior changes during the menstrual cycle. This is a small study from one region of Indonesia, so results may not apply elsewhere.
