# Does exercise help reduce premenstrual syndrome symptoms?

Structured exercise programs may reduce PMS symptoms, with aerobic, mind-body, and strengthening types showing benefits. However, evidence is mixed and varied, so we cannot yet say exercise prevents PMS or recommend which type works best.

 Moderate study design

Women with PMS (review of multiple studies, 2011-2026)

## What they did

A structured review of studies from January 2011 to 1 June 2026 on physical activity and exercise in PMS, examining both observational studies and intervention trials.

## What they found

Observational studies showed mixed results: some found inverse associations, some found none, and some found possible non-linear patterns. Intervention studies were more favorable overall but varied widely in results across aerobic, mind-body, and strengthening programs. Improvements in overall PMS did not always match improvements in pain, stress, or blood biomarkers alone.

## What it means for you

Exercise might help some women with PMS, and different types may work for different people. Major limits include small samples, different comparison groups, inconsistent reporting, and short follow-up. Severe symptoms still need medical assessment and should not be treated with exercise alone.
