# Does physical activity affect how severe PMS is in teenage girls?

Yes. Girls with less physical activity had higher risk of PMS. This relationship was found during the COVID-19 pandemic when many girls' activity dropped due to school closures.

 Early or limited evidence

78 female students aged 15-18 in Surabaya during the COVID-19 pandemic

## What they did

Researchers surveyed 78 female students aged 15-18 at a school in Surabaya during the COVID-19 pandemic. They asked about physical activity levels and PMS symptoms. They analysed whether amount of physical activity was linked to PMS severity.

## What they found

46.2% of girls had moderate physical activity and 57.7% had moderate PMS. There was a clear relationship between physical activity and PMS. Girls with less physical activity had 1.895 times the risk of PMS compared to girls with more physical activity.

## What it means for you

Lower physical activity appears linked to worse PMS. This matters because the pandemic made many girls less active, possibly worsening their PMS. The study is small and only shows these factors go together, not that less activity causes PMS. Girls and families need information about managing PMS and staying active during lockdowns.
