Survey study, 2016

# Is self-control linked to how severe PMS symptoms are?

Yes. Women with lower self-control reported more severe PMS symptoms. The study found a clear link between the two.

 Early or limited evidence

114 college women in Indonesia

## What they did

114 college women in Indonesia completed two questionnaires. One measured self-control (18 questions) and one measured PMS symptoms (18 questions).

## What they found

Women with lower self-control tended to have more severe PMS. Of the 114 women, 17.5% had low self-control, 68.4% had moderate self-control, and 14% had high self-control. For PMS severity: 14.9% had low symptoms, 68.4% had moderate symptoms, and 16.7% had high symptoms.

## What it means for you

Women with better self-control may experience less severe PMS symptoms, which suggests that managing emotions and behavior might help. The main limitation is that this is a cross-sectional study - it shows these two things are linked but does not prove that self-control causes lower PMS. The study was also small and from one university.
