Survey study, 2025

# Is there a relationship between diet, weight, and PMS?

Yes. There is a significant relationship between diet and PMS, and between weight and PMS. Most of the women studied (61.9%) reported having PMS.

 Early or limited evidence

214 female medical students in Indonesia.

## What they did

A total of 214 female medical students (from 2022 and 2023 classes) at a university in Indonesia completed a questionnaire about their diet, weight, and PMS symptoms. Researchers analyzed the data to see if diet and body weight were related to PMS.

## What they found

Most women (59.1%) reported good diet patterns, but 53% were above normal weight range. About 61.9% of the women experienced PMS. There was a significant relationship between diet and PMS, and also between weight and PMS.

## What it means for you

Diet and weight appear to be related to whether women experience PMS. This is relevant to understanding factors that may affect PMS. The main limitations are that this is a cross-sectional study (so we cannot say diet or weight causes PMS), the sample is only medical students in Indonesia, and the study does not explain how diet and weight influence PMS.
