Survey study, 2022

# Is poor lifestyle linked to PMS in teenage girls?

Yes. In this study, girls with poor lifestyle were about 4.5 times more likely to have PMS. However, the study only looked at one moment in time, so we cannot be sure poor lifestyle causes PMS.

 Early or limited evidence

60 teenage students at a school in Lampung Province, Indonesia

## What they did

Cross-sectional study of 60 teenage students at a school in Indonesia. Researchers used questionnaires to assess lifestyle, physical symptoms, and psychological changes. Data were analyzed with chi-square statistical testing.

## What they found

60% experienced PMS. 60% had physical changes. 58.3% had psychological changes. 54.1% had poor lifestyle. Poor lifestyle was linked to PMS (p=0.013) with an odds ratio of 4.545, meaning girls with poor lifestyle were about 4.5 times more likely to have PMS.

## What it means for you

In this group, poor lifestyle appeared connected to PMS. However, the study only looked at one moment in time, so we cannot be sure whether poor lifestyle causes PMS or what specific lifestyle factors matter most. The study may also have reverse causation, where PMS itself leads to poor lifestyle choices.
