# Is academic stress linked to PMS severity in university students?

Yes, clearly. Higher stress levels were linked to worse PMS symptoms.

 Moderate study design

159 midwifery students at a university in Indonesia

## What they did

Cross-sectional study of 159 midwifery students at a university in Indonesia. Researchers measured stress using the Perceived Stress Scale and PMS severity using the Shortened Premenstrual Assessment Form.

## What they found

Most students (81.1%) had moderate stress, 13.8% high stress, and 5% low stress. For PMS: 36.5% had moderate severity, 31.4% had severe PMS, and 3.1% did not experience PMS. Higher stress levels were clearly linked to worse PMS symptoms.

## What it means for you

Academic stress and PMS severity appear linked in university students. This study was at one university among midwifery students, so findings may not apply to all students. The study shows association but not cause and effect.

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is a common condition experienced by women of reproductive age, including university students, characterized by a combination of physical, psychological, and emotional symptoms that occur during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Psychological stress is recognized as one of the factors that may exacerbate PMS symptoms, particularly among students facing academic demands. This study aimed to determine the relationship between stress levels and the incidence of Premenstrual Syndrome among midwifery students at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha. This research employed a correlational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of all active midwifery students at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha. A total of 159 respondents were included using a total sampling technique. Data were collected using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) to assess stress levels and the Shortened Premenstrual Assessment Form (SPAF) to measure the incidence and severity of PMS. Data analysis included univariate analysis to describe respondent characteristics and bivariate analysis using the Spearman Rank correlation test with SPSS software. The results showed that most respondents experienced moderate stress levels (81.1%), while 13.8% experienced high stress and 5.0% experienced low stress. Regarding PMS, the majority of respondents experienced PMS of moderate severity (36.5%) and severe severity (31.4%), while only a small proportion did not experience PMS (3.1%). Statistical analysis revealed a significant relationship between stress levels and the incidence of Premenstrual Syndrome, with a p-value of 0.001 (p < 0.05). Higher stress levels were associated with increased severity of PMS symptoms. In conclusion, there is a significant relationship between stress levels and the incidence of Premenstrual Syndrome among midwifery students. These findings indicate that psychological stress plays an important role in the occurrence and severity of PMS. Therefore, stress management interventions and reproductive health education are essential to improve the well-being and academic performance of midwifery students.
