# Are negative attitudes about menstruation and PMS symptoms linked to burnout in nurses?

Yes. Nurses with negative attitudes about menstruation or PMS symptoms are more likely to experience burnout and work stress. PMS and age are the biggest factors linked to burnout.

 Early or limited evidence

140 clinical nurses in Korea

## What they did

Researchers studied 140 clinical nurses in Korea. They measured attitudes toward menstruation, symptoms of PMS, levels of stress, and signs of burnout (work exhaustion).

## What they found

Negative menstrual attitudes, PMS symptoms, and stress were all linked to burnout. Nurses with more negative attitudes about menstruation experienced more PMS symptoms. Those with PMS symptoms had more stress. Those with more stress had more burnout. PMS and age were the strongest predictors of burnout.

## What it means for you

In this group of nurses, PMS symptoms and negative feelings about menstruation are connected to work exhaustion. This suggests that managing PMS symptoms and improving attitudes toward menstruation might help reduce burnout. However, this study cannot prove that PMS causes burnout, only that they are linked. The study was done in Korea and may not apply to other countries.
