Survey study, 2026

# What factors help female college students cope with premenstrual syndrome?

Finding health information online, having more severe PMS symptoms, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle all help students cope with PMS. Together these factors explain 22% of the variation in coping ability.

 Early or limited evidence

226 female college students

## What they did

Online survey of 226 female college students. Asked them about their premenstrual syndrome symptoms, their ability to find and understand health information online, whether they exercise and eat well, and how well they cope with PMS each month.

## What they found

Students who were better at finding and using health information online coped better with premenstrual syndrome. Students with more severe PMS symptoms were more motivated to cope. Students who exercised and maintained healthy habits also coped better. These three factors together explained 22% of the differences in how well students managed their PMS.

## What it means for you

Teaching students where to find reliable health information online and encouraging exercise and healthy eating might help them manage PMS. However, the study only explains 22% of what helps with coping, so other important factors remain unknown. Because this was a single survey, we cannot prove these factors cause better coping.
