# What factors are linked to the water-retention form of PMS?

Emotional stress, tissue swelling symptoms, and three hormone levels (progesterone, prolactin, and cortisol) were linked together in women with the water-retention form of PMS. However, this was a small study with no control group, so these results may not apply reliably to other women.

 Early or limited evidence

130 women of early reproductive age with the water-retention form of PMS

## What they did

Researchers studied 130 women of early reproductive age with the water-retention form of PMS. They collected information about their medical history and emotional strain, and measured three hormone levels.

## What they found

There were connections between emotional and mental strain, tissue swelling symptoms, and the three hormone levels (progesterone, prolactin, and cortisol) in women with the water-retention form of PMS.

## What it means for you

The study suggests emotional stress and hormones may play a role in water retention in PMS, but it was small with no control group for comparison.
