# How does PMS affect self-esteem in girls?

Girls with PMS showed lower self-esteem compared to expected levels. The link may be because PMS mood changes lead girls to feel worse about themselves.

 Early or limited evidence

200 high school girls in Shiraz with PMS, mean age 16.3 years

## What they did

Cross-sectional study of 200 high school girls with PMS in Shiraz city. Researchers measured PMS symptoms (physical, mental, and social) and self-esteem using questionnaires completed over two consecutive months.

## What they found

Mean age was 16.34 plus or minus 1.06 years, with 50.5 percent aged 14-16. Physical symptom scores averaged 11.43 plus or minus 3.89, mental symptom scores 12.87 plus or minus 4.49, and total scores 39.28 plus or minus 16.2. Among girls with PMS, 53 percent reported moderate self-esteem and 47 percent reported high self-esteem. High self-esteem was decreased in girls with PMS.

## What it means for you

PMS may affect how girls feel about themselves, possibly through mood changes. But this is a cross-sectional study from one city in Iran, so it cannot prove PMS causes lower self-esteem.
