Survey study, 2021

# Does feeling in control improve attitude toward periods?

Yes. Feeling in control was linked to more positive attitudes about menstruation. Feeling in control partially explained how premenstrual discomfort affects attitude.

 Early or limited evidence

148 female college students from a university in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea

## What they did

148 female college students completed questionnaires measuring premenstrual discomfort, attitude toward menstruation, and perceived control. Researchers looked at how these factors related to each other.

## What they found

Premenstrual discomfort was linked to negative attitudes about periods. Feeling in control was linked to both less premenstrual discomfort and more positive attitudes about periods. Feeling in control partially explained the link between discomfort and attitude.

## What it means for you

Helping women feel more in control might improve their attitude toward their periods. This relationship was clear in this group. Results are from one university in South Korea.
