# How do irregular periods affect quality of life?

Irregular periods and period pain harm quality of life in medical students. 90.9% had PMS and 91.4% had period pain, with irregular periods clearly affecting their social, psychological, and physical well-being.

 Early or limited evidence

625 female medical students aged 18-25 in India

## What they did

Cross-sectional study of 625 female medical students aged 18-25 at King George's Medical University in India from March 2023 to March 2024. Students completed questionnaires about menstrual cycle regularity, period pain, premenstrual syndrome symptoms, and quality of life.

## What they found

72.5% had regular cycles and 17% had infrequent cycles. 91.4% experienced period pain with moderate pain being most common. 90.9% had premenstrual syndrome, with 41.3% experiencing moderate to severe symptoms. Irregular cycles significantly affected social, psychological, and physical aspects of quality of life.

## What it means for you

Period problems are very common in medical students and clearly affect their daily lives. Limited to one university in India, so findings may not represent all women or other countries. Study didn't test treatments or explore why this happens.
