# Why do some women experience mood changes linked to their menstrual cycle?

Evidence shows these women have normal hormone levels but heightened sensitivity in their brains and cells to hormone changes. This explains PMDD and some postpartum and perimenopausal mood problems, and has led to new treatments.

Women across the reproductive lifespan

## What they did

Systematic review of PubMed and Google Scholar from inception to September 2026 examining how reproductive hormones affect mood, sleep, and thinking across a woman's life from period through menopause.

## What they found

Evidence from hormone-stopping and hormone add-back studies, research on brain chemistry (allopregnanolone and GABA-A receptors), and gene expression studies showed that affected women have normal hormone levels but altered brain and cell responses to hormonal changes. This explains premenstrual dysphoric disorder, some postpartum depression, and depression around menopause.

## What it means for you

This reframes PMDD and related conditions from being dismissed as emotional overreaction to a real biological condition based on how the brain responds to hormones. The authors warn against treating all difficult emotions as medical problems. This review covers a broad range of reproductive conditions.
