Survey study, 1985

# Does surgery to remove pelvic scar tissue help with pelvic pain and other problems?

Surgery helped with infertility, chronic pelvic pain, and pain during intercourse. However, it did not help with painful periods or premenstrual tension.

 Early or limited evidence

100 patients with gross pelvic adhesions

## What they did

Survey of 100 patients who had surgery (adhesiolysis) to remove scar tissue in the pelvis. Patients completed a questionnaire about whether their symptoms improved after surgery.

## What they found

The surgery was effective for treating infertility, chronic pelvic pain, and dyspareunia (pain during intercourse). Its effectiveness in relieving dysmenorrhea (painful periods) was uncertain. Surgery did not affect menstrual pattern or premenstrual tension.

## What it means for you

If you have pelvic scar tissue causing pain or infertility problems, surgery may help. However, it won't help with PMS symptoms or period pain. The main limitation is this is a small survey without a control group, so we can't tell if improvements would have happened anyway without surgery.
