Survey study, 2017

# Does learning about reproductive health help girls handle PMS better?

Girls with more knowledge about reproductive health had more supportive attitudes toward PMS. Most girls in the study had either poor knowledge or unsupportive attitudes, suggesting education might help.

 Early or limited evidence

140 female high school students in Indonesia

## What they did

Indonesian researchers surveyed 140 female high school students using questionnaires. They measured their knowledge of reproductive health and their attitudes about dealing with PMS.

## What they found

66 of the 140 students (47.1%) had poor knowledge about reproductive health. 71 of the 140 students (50.7%) had unsupportive attitudes about PMS. There was a clear relationship between knowledge and attitudes. Girls with better knowledge were more likely to have supportive attitudes.

## What it means for you

Teaching girls about reproductive health may help them develop better attitudes about managing PMS. However, this was a study in one Indonesian high school, so results may not apply to girls in other schools or countries. The study only measured attitudes and knowledge, not whether teaching improves PMS symptoms.
