# How common are PMS and PMDD in Iranian medical students, and what factors increase risk?

38.6% had PMS and 8% had PMDD. The strongest risk factors were recent stress and being married.

 Early or limited evidence

264 medical students from one university in Iran, mean age 21.05 years

## What they did

Cross-sectional study of 264 medical students who completed questionnaires assessing PMS and PMDD symptoms and factors like stress, marriage status, chronic disease, and medication use.

## What they found

102 students (38.6%) met criteria for PMS and 21 (8%) for PMDD. Most common symptoms were decreased interest in daily activities (60.6%), depressed mood (60.2%), fatigue/lack of energy (52.3%), and difficulty concentrating (51.1%). Marriage and stress in the last 3 months were the strongest predictors of PMS.

## What it means for you

Stress and marriage appear linked to PMS risk in this group, and reducing stress might help. However, this is one university in Iran so results may not apply to other groups.
