# Does PMS severity predict how much alcohol college women drink?

PMS severity predicted weekday alcohol drinking but not weekend drinking. The link appears to exist before serious drinking problems develop.

 Early or limited evidence

193 college women from a large urban university

## What they did

193 college women at a large urban university completed questionnaires about PMS severity and how much they drank on weekdays and weekends during the past year.

## What they found

PMS severity significantly predicted annual weekday alcohol consumption but did not predict weekend alcohol consumption.

## What it means for you

PMS might be a risk factor for heavier weekday drinking in college women, which could help identify women at risk for drinking problems. Limitations include that the study was only at one university and asked women to remember their drinking from one year, so cannot prove PMS causes drinking. Results may apply only to college women early in their drinking careers.
