# Which lifestyle factors are linked to premenstrual symptoms?

Coffee consumption was linked to worse premenstrual symptoms, and people with symptoms were more likely to be physically inactive. Reducing coffee and increasing physical activity might help reduce symptoms.

 Early or limited evidence

209 medical students and interns at a private medical college

## What they did

Researchers surveyed 209 medical students about their diet, physical activity, menstrual history, and premenstrual symptoms.

## What they found

Feeling tired was reported by 30.6% of participants and mood swings by 25.4%. Coffee consumption was linked to worse premenstrual symptoms. Those with premenstrual symptoms were more likely to be physically inactive (39.7%) compared to those without symptoms (35.2%).

## What it means for you

Making lifestyle changes like reducing coffee and increasing physical activity might help reduce the impact of premenstrual symptoms on daily life. The main limitation is that the study only included medical students at one college, so findings may not apply to all women.
