# How common is premenstrual syndrome among medical students?

All medical students surveyed had PMS according to the questionnaire used, though most had mild or moderate symptoms. The 100% rate is higher than other studies and suggests the questionnaire captured very mild cases.

 Early or limited evidence

228 female medical undergraduate students at Lady Hardinge Medical College in New Delhi, India

## What they did

Cross-sectional survey of 228 female medical undergraduate students at Lady Hardinge Medical College in New Delhi using a premenstrual syndrome questionnaire, analyzed by frequency and percentage.

## What they found

All 228 participants were classified as having PMS. About 61% were aged 21-25 years. In severity, 40.8% had mild symptoms, 35.1% moderate, 18.0% severe, and 6.1% very severe. No significant difference in severity between age groups was found.

## What it means for you

While the study found PMS is very common in medical students, the 100% rate is unusually high compared to other research, suggesting the questionnaire may classify minor symptoms as PMS. The true number with clinically significant PMS is likely lower.
