# Can PMS affect a woman's relationship with her husband?

Yes, this study found that worse PMS was linked to a worse marital relationship, especially for women with severe symptoms.

 Early or limited evidence

96 employed women attending health centers

## What they did

A cross-sectional study of 96 employed women at health centers. Anxiety, stress and depression were measured with the DASS-21 scale, PMS was confirmed using a short PMS questionnaire over two menstrual cycles, and marital relationship quality was measured with the RDAS questionnaire.

## What they found

27.5% of women had mild PMS, 56% moderate, and 9.9% plus 5.4% had severe or very severe PMS. The link between PMS and marital relationship quality was statistically significant (P = 0.024). Follow-up testing (Tukey test) showed women with severe and very severe PMS scored lower on marital relationship quality.

## What it means for you

Severe PMS may go along with more strain in a marriage, so getting help for PMS symptoms could also support relationship wellbeing. This is a cross-sectional study of a small group of employed women, so it cannot prove PMS causes relationship problems, only that the two are linked.
