# How common are PMS and PMDD, and how much do they affect women's daily life?

About one in five young women have PMS and one in 14 have PMDD. Both cause real problems with work and school productivity.

 Moderate study design

150 women aged 18-30 at a hospital in India

## What they did

Cross-sectional study of 150 women aged 18-30 at a hospital. Researchers collected demographic information and asked about menstrual symptoms, then assessed who met criteria for PMS or PMDD using standard diagnostic interviews.

## What they found

21.33% had PMS, 14% had moderate to severe PMS, and 7.33% had PMDD. Fatigue and loss of interest in work were the most common symptoms. The main impact was decreased work or school efficiency. Higher BMI, having symptoms since first period, longer symptom duration, menstrual cramps, and family history all increased risk of PMS or PMDD.

## What it means for you

PMS and PMDD are common and cause real work and school problems. Several risk factors could help doctors spot who needs treatment, but this is cross-sectional so we can't prove these factors cause PMS.
