# How common is PMS in adolescents with psychiatric problems and does it affect their quality of life?

PMS was present in nearly 4 out of 5 adolescents in a psychiatric clinic and significantly lowered their quality of life. The more severe their PMS, the worse their quality of life became.

 Early or limited evidence

55 adolescents from a child and adolescent psychiatry clinic

## What they did

Researchers assessed 55 adolescents admitted to a psychiatric clinic using screening tools to identify PMS symptoms, psychiatric diagnoses, and measure quality of life.

## What they found

78.2% had PMS: 46.5% mild, 34.8% moderate, and 18.6% severe. 89% had at least one psychiatric disorder, most commonly anxiety or depression. Anger and irritability were the most common PMS symptoms. Quality of life was significantly lower in those with PMS and worsened as PMS severity increased.

## What it means for you

PMS is very common in young people with psychiatric conditions and harms their quality of life. However, this looked only at teenagers already receiving psychiatric care, so results may not apply to all teenagers.

89%

had at least one psychiatric disorder

18.6%
