# How common are PMS and PMDD in women with mood and anxiety disorders?

PMS affected 47.5% and PMDD affected 13.0% of women with mood or anxiety disorders. Both were significantly linked to diet, menstrual patterns, and medication use.

 Early or limited evidence

200 women aged 18-45 with mood or anxiety disorders in Thailand

## What they did

Researchers collected information from 200 women at a psychiatric clinic in Thailand about their lifestyles, medical history, and menstrual patterns, then screened them for PMS and PMDD using a standard questionnaire.

## What they found

PMS occurred in 47.5% and PMDD in 13.0%. PMS was significantly linked to eating chocolate, not eating bananas, weight changes, irregular periods, painful periods, muscle pain, and taking benzodiazepines. PMDD was significantly linked to money worries, eating chocolate, not eating bananas, abnormal menstrual cycle length, and dizziness during menstruation.

## What it means for you

PMS and PMDD are very common in women with mental health conditions, and diet and menstrual patterns may play a role. This was a cross-sectional study at one clinic in Thailand and observational, so we cannot prove that diet causes these conditions.
