# What is the prevalence of PMDD and severity of PMS among female college students in India?

About 4% of female college students had PMDD, and nearly a quarter experienced severe mood swings. Healthcare students had higher rates of moderate to severe symptoms than non-healthcare students.

 Early or limited evidence

500 female college students aged 17-27 at healthcare and non-healthcare colleges in India (478 completed surveys)

## What they did

Cross-sectional survey of 500 women aged 17-27 at healthcare and non-healthcare colleges in India from May to October 2017. Students completed 478 surveys total. They assessed PMS and PMDD prevalence and severity using standardized measures and compared healthcare versus non-healthcare students.

## What they found

PMDD was diagnosed in 3.2% of non-healthcare students and 4.8% of healthcare students, for a total of 3.97%. Mood swings was the most common symptom, severe in around 22% of the total sample. Out of 478 participants, 7.3% were using hormonal supplements. Healthcare students reported a higher percentage of moderate to severe symptoms than non-healthcare students.

## What it means for you

PMS and PMDD are common in Indian college students, with PMDD affecting about 4%. Mood swings are a major symptom for many women. However, this is a survey from one institution in one country, so results may not apply to other populations.
