Survey study, 1979

# Is psychiatric illness connected to premenstrual symptoms?

Yes. There is a clear relationship between having psychiatric symptoms and reporting premenstrual complaints.

 Early or limited evidence

521 women from general practice and 170 from a premenstrual symptom clinic

## What they did

Cross-sectional study of 691 women: 521 from general practice and 170 attending a clinic for premenstrual symptoms. All women completed questionnaires. A smaller subgroup also had interviews with a psychiatrist and social worker to assess psychiatric problems.

## What they found

The results showed a clear relationship between psychiatric problems and premenstrual complaints.

## What it means for you

Women who report psychiatric symptoms are more likely to report premenstrual symptoms, or vice versa. However, this study cannot show whether psychiatric illness causes premenstrual symptoms, premenstrual symptoms cause psychiatric problems, or both stem from a common cause.
